IMMIGRANTS
Immigrants is an edition of 24 ceramic bird forms addressing immigration in a neutral state. Immigrants and migration are inherently neither good nor bad. Uncountable numbers of animals and people moving is natural to the course of time, space and life on this planet. We might appreciate the true character of immigrants as we appreciate the simple nature of birds in migration to better habitat. The prolific sitings of birds in everyday life creates an opportunity for reminding and revisiting a concept or feeling. By creating an edition of these bird forms there is a practice and process of remembering the normalcy of migration. This work is directly related to the conflict between the United States government and Latin American immigrants. -
IMMIGRANTS 2
Immigrants 2 is a flock of ceramic birds made in response to the first edition of Immigrants made using white ceramic. For this edition of 20 birds, using red clay and an iron oxide coating addresses the need for greater variation when considering the many different beings that migrate. Choosing to create a second edition of Immigrants also relates to an on-going practice of meditation relating to immigrant issues in the United States. -
MIGRATION
Indicative of invisible change, Migration is conceptually and physically representative of the process of change, that is at once immediate and slowly ongoing. The slow process of felting wool fibers using a single barbed needle is by itself meditation cultivating a change in personal disposition. The final collection of birds represent the movement and change of flocks through space. Each bird is made of 2 colors dividing the bird between where/who it was and where/who it is becoming.
